This picture shows how in the great depression there was alot of poverty. Many familys had to go downtown to get free food to feed thier faamiles. Also this was a big out break after the stock markets crashed.

Shantytown- An economically depressed section of the town consisting of crudely built dwelling usually made from wood. 

Hooverville- Nickname given to shantytowns in the United States during the depression.

Soap Operas- A serial drama on television or radio using melodramatic situations.

Economical

Stock Market- A system for buying and selling stocks in corporation.

Speculation- A act of buying stocks at great risks with the anticipation that the price will rise.

Gold Standard- A monetary standard in which one once of gold equaled a set number of dollars.

Political

Foreclose- To take possession of a property from a mortgagor because of defaults on payments. 

Public Works- Projects such as highways, parks, and libraries built with public funds for public use.

Relief- Aid for the needy, Welfare.

Attempts to salvage the market were unsuccessful. On Oct. 28, 1929, now known as “Black Monday,” the market closed down 12.8 percent. The following day, “Black Tuesday,” more than 16 million shares were traded as the Dow dropped another 12 percent. Many prominent American companies and financial institutions collapsed, as their company stock became virtually worthless. This was not at all any form of progress, the economy was slowly shutting down & there was not much anyone could do.The belief that all individuals, or nearly all individuals, can succeed on their own and that government help for people should be minimal. The phrase is often associated with policies of the Republican party and was widely used by the Republican president Herbert Hoover. Not Progressive because later on people used this phrase to refer to the great depression and moves made by Hoover. Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Almost immediately he began secretly building up Germany's army and weapons. In 1934 he increased the size of the army, began building warships and created a German airforce. Compulsory military service was also introduced. This was not progress at all. Hitler turned out to be a power hungry man willing to kill anyone he didn't like. He was one of the main causes of World War II. When it was suggested that World War II was approaching. Even as the war started in Europe with the invasion of France, many Americans thought that the U.S. should avoid becoming involved. The United States government recognized that American participation was necessary, and quickly stepped up pro-war propaganda. This is not progress because people shouldn't join the war. War is bad in general & we had no reason to be there. I don't believe propaganda should have been used to get people to join
